HHV's 37th year of service to America's heroes - our veterans
Although it's been 37 years since HHV first began delivering its therapeutic arts & crafts to what seemed an insatiable VA hospital system, the demand has not subsided. In fact, even as World War II veterans are sadly passing away at an ever-increasing rate, the request for "new and unique kits" as well as "more of the models and other items sent previously" is on the rise. From January 1 to June 30, 2008, HHV has processed 416 shipments for VA, military and state veteran nursing home facilities. Compare that to 169 shipments which HHV delivered during its first six months of inception!
The types of kits have evolved as well. Although the desire for such items as classic cars, military models and leather moccasins remains constant, the veterans crave fresh ideas and HHV always welcomes their input. In fact, many of the newer kits that have become regular stock items were originally suggestions made by the veterans themselves.
Over the years HHV has even made special one-time purchases at the request of veterans, including miniature doll houses (which later led to a building competition won by veterans at the Bay Pines, Florida VAMC), hot-rod "street racers" which many veterans received permission to race in VA facility parking lots and other approved areas.
I
n general, however, the need for arts & crafts for use as tools in occupational therapy strength and coordination reestablishment, substance abuse intervention and a host of other needs strengthens HHV's resolve to continue to raise the much-needed funding to keep this program alive and in generous supply to our nation's heroes - the veterans.
